AAJA announces the Yasutsune “Tony” Hirashiki Scholarship Fund

Scholarship to honor a legendary AAPI journalist and support intergenerational mentorship across ELP and VOICES

The Asian American Journalists Association (AAJA) is proud to announce the launch of the Yasutsune “Tony” Hirashiki Scholarship Fund. This annual intergenerational scholarship supports journalists at different stages of their careers, with one award covering tuition and a small stipend for an ELP participant, and one award to an outstanding VOICES student who has demonstrated leadership potential. The Fund recognizes those who mentor and uplift others, continuing Tony’s lifelong dedication to storytelling, mentorship, and community.

Hirashiki, a pioneering cameraman best known for his decades of coverage with ABC News and his fearless reporting from Vietnam to 9/11, received AAJA’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2018. Over the course of a four-decade career, he championed truth, elevated the voices of those around him, and mentored generations of journalists behind the scenes.

By supporting both early-career and mid-career journalists, the Yasutsune “Tony” Hirashiki Scholarship Fund bridges generations and reflects AAJA’s commitment to cultivating leadership and excellence in journalism.

AAJA invites those who want to support the next generation of AAPI journalists and newsroom leaders to contribute to our general scholarship fund, which helps foster mentorship, leadership, and opportunity across our programs.
