It’s that time again! AAJA-NY is looking for its next secretary, and we’re asking members to vote for who they think should fill the role.

Nichole Kwok

NicholeHi everyone, my name is Nichole Kwok and I’m running as AAJA’s Secretary because it’s the perfect position for me to give back to the community. At the moment I’m one of the morning news producers for News 12 Bronx/Brooklyn. Before that I worked at WPTZ, an NBC-affiliate for Burlington, VT. I’m originally from the Bay Area in California and graduated from University of California Davis. Throughout college I was very active in my community serving as the Executive Secretary for the student body. As secretary I maintained agendas, attendance, and weekly meeting minutes. One of the most important roles I held as secretary was being the liaison between students and administrative faculty on campus. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about anything! Cheers!

Phil Yam

PY2_cropped2_headI am declaring my candidacy to fill Heather’s secretary post on the
AAJA-NY board.

I am the managing editor, online, for Scientific American, where I
oversee the website content, including blogs, video and podcasts, and
other e-publications. I also held positions on the print side, including
news editor. I wrote a well-received book on mad cow disease in 2003
and contributed the first chapter to A Field Guide for Science Writers.

I joined AAJA in the late 1990s and organized a panel for the 2000
convention (I got Neil DeGrasse Tyson on it). Last year, I completed
AAJA’s Executive Leadership Program. An eye-opener for me, it gave
me many insights on the skills necessary to succeed in our changing
industry. Best of all, I became reacquainted with AAJA and met many
talented and inspiring members.

Now I’d love to give back to AAJA, whose mission of professional
development, education, outreach and media watch I consider noble
and worthwhile. As secretary, I hope to share the enthusiasm and
energy I felt after ELP with other AAJA members and to find ways of
using my 20-plus years of experience to keep the organization vital
and growing.
