AAJA-NY Chapter Meeting Minutes May 29, 2014

Our largest turnout this year so far with 25 + in attendance. Was it the spring weather ?
I. Trivia Bowl Update from Bao
It was the highest earning Trivia Bowl to date, netting some $15,600, which will go to scholarships, training and National Convention support
II. Treasurer’s report from Carolyn Sun
A. Some Trivia Bowl sponsors have not paid yet (NBC/AARP); Carolyn has followed up several times but she doesn’t want to pester them.
B. Former chapter treasurer Chris Chiang says it takes time for the accounting depts. to process the checks but they will eventually pay.
C. Balance: $41, 200 in Apple; $9,000 in Dreyfus
III. Convention push and scholarships
A. Review of our chapter responsibilities (3 auction items)
1. Travel/ hotel: we have a Double Tree one-night stay
2. NY experience: Phil got four tickets to American Museum of Natural History and some related books; Sona is working on contacting Shree about a behind the scenes tour at Met; Corky and Ursula mentioned special tours at MOCA
3. High-value item: Phil has a Google Nexus phone (unlocked) valued at $400
B. Push to get members to attend National Convention. Pre-registration ends June 17.
C. Convention scholarships have been awarded (5 full; 2 student)
IV. Upcoming Events
A. Singapore Noir, June 12, Cheryl Tan’s book event
B. Asian American Writers Workshop Convention is June 8; needs promotion on social media and listserv. AAWW offering $50 for AAJA members
C. Ed Lin’s Taiwanese Night Market book event August 3
D. Pre-convention mixer
1. Yin Mei is looking into possible bars/lounges where we don’t need a deposit; but may have to spend $1,000 minimum; Ursula recommend Louies.
E. Sona suggests we do a pre-convention mini boot camp on sprucing up social media accounts, including facebook and Twitter. Get professional photogs to take headshots. Add a resume critique component. Possibly to be held at NY Times bldg. Invite other nearby chapters. Mid-to-late July.
A. Intern scholarship, Spring winner Yuna already awarded; summer waiting for more applicants
B. Convention Scholarships awarded
C. Board voted unanimously in favor of donating $2,000 to J-Camp
D. ELP scholarships—board needs to decide on awarding stipend to a late applicant.
VI. Mentorship Coordinator- Phil is looking for someone to take over the mentorship program; it’s organized through national; both sides needs to fill out paperwork. Perhaps someone in broadcast would be a good coordinator as there is a high demand for broadcast mentorship.
VII. Member Spotlight feature
A. Emily Tan has a couple of member features in the hopper; looking for nominations; members in all stages of their careers are welcome. Looking for range of experiences and interests. Founding AAJA member Marilyn K Yee who recently retired from the NY Times would be a good spotlight, suggests Corky.
