SAJA 2011 Awards Gala

The South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) concluded its two-day convention this past Saturday with a Gala Awards Dinner at Columbia University’s Lerner Hall. In support of our ally organization, several AAJA NY Chapter members attended the gala to help commemorate the honored SAJA members and journalists. Hosted by Karan Khanid and Hari Sreenivasan, SAJA President Jigar Mehta awarded and congratulated journalists and students for their coverage of South Asian news and cultural topics. Moreover, at the awards gala, 2011 Scholarships winners were announced, and SAJA At-
Large Officer, Sree Sreenivasan led a tribute to the late Amrit Kakaria. The gala came to a close with a speech by its keynote speaker, international editor at The Wall Street Journal, Rebecca Blumenstein followed by a question and answer session. Rubenstein ended her question and answer session with her biggest piece of advice for journalists: “You can do it, and believe in yourself.” SAJA’s two-day convention featured a variety of panels, workshop mentoring hours and a job fair. Conference topics ranged from “Video Journalism Abroad” to “The Best Pitch of All: How Freelancers Do It.”
Overall, the convention was well received and was a very productive event.
