Many AAJA members in New York can’t afford to be in Detroit this week. With newsrooms cutting budgets, many journalists have to pay for professional training programs and related travel out of their own pockets. I’m fortunate to work for a company that sends me to the AAJA national convention each year. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be able to attend such a worthwhile conference.
The good news is that more than 60 AAJA-NY members will be in Motown! Four received fellowships from the Ford Foundation: Bao Ong, Maria Sandoval, Vinita Singla and Shawn Wen. Five members received chapter scholarships to attend the convention and cover the various events and panels. They will be blogging throughout the convention with their observations and insights, so be sure to stay tuned to the blog for daily updates! Meet the scholarship winners/convention bloggers:
I’m very excited to visit Detroit for the first time. It’s going to be an amazing four days! I’ll be on the look out for fellow New York chapter members. I’ll blog about what happens at the General Membership Meeting on Friday from 11:45 a.m.-1:30 p.m. I’ll be meeting with the advisory board all day Saturday. And because I’m also on the governing board, I’ll meet with the national officers and rest of the voting members on Sunday. It’s my honor to serve and represent the New York chapter. You can reach me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
See you in Detroit!
