UNITY Day Two

Christine Hsu August 3, 2012 0

After dancing the night away at Surrender with fellow AAJAers, Linda Giang, Heather Schultz and I went to breakfast with Henry and Ken Moritsugu, our New York AAJA chapter mentors.

Henry Moritsugu works at Newsday and told us the history on how he got into journalism. Ken, his son, is based out of Bangkok, Thailand and described working at AP.

Both men also shared their personal experiences of being a member of AAJA and how the organization has changed.

I then went to Writing Memorable Ledes and Intros. Helpful tips at the workshop included reading your ledes loud, separating a long anecdote with a nut graf can bring clarity to a story and descriptions should evoke emotion. The panelists shared fascinating articles including mutton busting (little kids riding sheep like men riding bulls) and Cambodian prostitutes.

After lunch, I attended the exhibition hall to meet with various organizations and picked up free swag. My favorites were speakers for your iPod and a Rubik’s Cube.

Later, I was back on networking duty attending several mixers as follows: NPR, AAJA Radio Group and SAJA.

All the cocktails, finger food and business card exchanging wore me out and made me delighted to fall asleep in my bed after a busy day.
